Long gone are the days when we’d use a simple shop bought skin regime consisting of a face wash and a moisturiser, lounge out in the sun with our faces exposed, minimal SPF, tanning beds (even writing that makes me shudder),ugh the early skin aging and not to mention the increased risk of UV related skin cancer, well, we are now in the days of protect, prevent and promote.
Skin health and aesthetic rejuvenation medicine is not just a trend, it is here to stay and should be embraced. Retinol (vitamin A) (promote dermal turnover), Broad spectrum high factor SPF (protect) and antioxidant serums such as vitamin C (prevent/ protect) should make up the basic skin care routine of anyone even remotely wanting to entertain the idea that they can slow down skin aging. For those wanting to see a significant change in their skin quality there are so many more products/ devices now available. Profhilo (not just for skin but now fat compartments within the face- ‘let me at’ it I hear you say), hyaluronic acid dermal boosters, polynucleotides, exosomes, PRP, skin peels, LED, calcium hydroxyapatite fillers, microneedling + radiofrequency, laser, BBL, fat freezing, high frequency ultrasound and this list is not exhaustive.
We’ve moved into the era of aesthetic medicine being normalised and no longer a taboo, with appointments jotted on the calendar just as for the dentist or hairdresser, it is no longer just a one off, something to be embarrassed about or shy away from, clinic appointments are now a regular and frequent event to maintain skin health and continue renewal, revitalisation and regeneration of soft tissues and skin.
We’re seeing an uptake in males, utilising aesthetic appointments for skin care, peels, injectables and device led treatments. We are seeing a significant uptake in the use of medical grade skin products; Skinceuticals, Alumier and Obaji to name a few.
Moving from across the pond, and making its way to us rapidly, the concept of The Skin Lab. All things skin; skin assessment, recommendations of products & treatments on a regime and timescale to provide significant results. We're moving away from one off treatments and truly investing in our skin health.
Of course there is still a place for filler, but the age of preventative and rejuvenation aesthetic medicine is here and it is here to stay.
